This case study focuses on a TV aerial repair we carried out at a very rural farm property. The engineer was working quite literally in the middle of nowhere, far from any local TV transmitter. Because of the remote location, the farm was receiving an extremely weak TV signal, and the existing aerial system was no longer performing as it should.
To restore a stable Freeview service, we assessed the full aerial setup, checked the incoming signal levels, and planned the best way to boost performance in such a challenging location.
Initial Inspection
During the inspection, the engineer confirmed that the farm was positioned well beyond the normal coverage area for the nearest transmitter. As expected, the signal reaching the property was very weak, causing pixelation, missing channels and constant picture break-up.
We also checked the condition of the cabling and found that the aerial coax cable had been exposed to the weather for many years. Moisture had worked its way inside the cable, and rainwater was present inside the outer sheath. Left unresolved, this type of water damage can eventually travel down the cable and reach the TV itself—something no customer wants.
Boosting the TV Signal
To overcome the weak reception, we installed a mast head amplifier. This type of amplifier is fitted directly on the aerial mast and is designed to boost low incoming signal before it travels down the cable into the property.
Because mast head amplifiers are most effective when placed as close to the aerial as possible, this installation method ensured the signal was strengthened at the very start of the cable run. The amplifier was then powered internally via a 12V power unit plugged into a standard mains socket inside the farm building.
We adjusted the amplifier levels to suit the exact signal readings for the location, ensuring the boost was strong enough to stabilise the picture without causing overload.
Repairing the Aerial Cable
Once the amplifier was installed, we replaced the full length of damaged coax cable. The previous cable, having taken in rainwater, was no longer capable of delivering a clean signal. A fresh, weather-resistant cable ensured the new system was protected against future water ingress.
With the new cable in place, we carried out a series of signal checks inside the property to make sure that the boosted signal was delivering a reliable Freeview service to the TV.
Result
The finished job provided the customer with:
- A clean, boosted Freeview signal suitable for a rural location
- A mast head amplifier installed and adjusted for weak-signal performance
- New coaxial cable to prevent further water damage
- A stable TV picture with no pixelation or missing channels
The difference was immediately noticeable, and the customer went from struggling to watch TV to enjoying a strong, consistent service.

Rural properties often sit far outside the main transmitter coverage zones, and this can make receiving Freeview difficult without specialist equipment. A mast head amplifier is one of the most effective ways to give the signal the lift it needs, especially when combined with fresh, weatherproof cabling.
