This case study highlights a TV aerial installation carried out overlooking a church with a George Cross flag flying proudly in the wind. We were called to repair a TV aerial feeding a BT box, as the customer was experiencing ongoing Freeview reception issues.
Once on site, it became clear that the problem wasn’t with the BT equipment at all—it was the aerial system itself, which had reached the end of its life.
Initial Inspection
The engineer inspected the aerial from the ground and quickly identified that it was extremely old. Based on its design and condition, it was estimated to be at least 25 years old. Aerials of this age often struggle with modern digital Freeview signals, especially if exposed to years of harsh weather.
Given its age and deterioration, we advised the customer that repairing it would not provide a long-term fix. A full replacement was the only reliable solution, and the customer agreed to proceed.
Replacing the Aerial
The engineer fitted a brand-new high gain digital aerial designed specifically for weak or unstable reception areas. This ensured the strongest possible Freeview signal for the customer’s BT box.
To provide a secure and long-lasting installation, the aerial was mounted using galvanized brackets. These brackets are rust-resistant and ideal for exposed areas—especially one overlooking an open churchyard where the weather can be harsher.
The installation also required routing a brand-new cable into the property. This involved drilling through a stone wall approximately three feet thick—a challenging but necessary task to ensure a clean, direct signal feed into the home.
Result
The work provided the customer with:
- A new high gain aerial suitable for modern Freeview signals
- Strong and stable reception feeding their BT box
- Galvanized brackets for long-lasting weather protection
- A professionally routed cable through a three-foot stone wall
The difference in signal quality was immediate, with all Freeview channels restored and performing perfectly.
Our Final Say
Aerial systems over 20 years old will almost always struggle with today’s digital broadcasting standards. Replacing outdated equipment with a modern, high gain aerial is often the quickest and most effective way to restore perfect Freeview reception.
If your signal is breaking up or your aerial looks past its best, we can assess your setup and install a long-lasting, high-quality replacement—no matter how challenging the location may be.
