Digital TV Aerial Installation for a Wakefield Home

This case study covers a job we attended in Wakefield, where a customer needed an old Freeview aerial repaired. The aerial was positioned above a conservatory on an extremely tall 20-foot mast, making access almost impossible. The engineer could see the aerial from the end of the street, which immediately suggested the installation was very old.

Once on site, it became clear that the aerial had been fitted when the house was originally built in the late 1980s, long before the conservatory was added. Because the conservatory blocked all access, repairing or replacing the aerial in its existing position wasn’t an option.

Old Analogue Aerial

From ground level, the engineer confirmed that the existing aerial was the original analogue aerial from around 1989. It was completely outdated and totally unsuitable for today’s digital Freeview signals.

The main challenge wasn’t just that the aerial was old – it was the fact that reaching it safely was impossible due to the conservatory roof directly beneath it. This meant a different approach was needed to provide the customer with a reliable TV signal.

The Solution

The best option was to install a brand-new digital aerial in a completely different location—one that could be accessed safely using ladders and wasn’t obstructed by the conservatory.

The engineer used a professional signal meter to test various mounting positions around the property. Once the strongest and most stable signal point was identified and agreed with the customer, the installation was carried out quickly and without any disruption.

The new aerial was fitted securely, aligned perfectly, and connected using modern cabling and fittings. Once the installation was complete, the customer immediately received a strong, clear Freeview signal.

Why Was the Original Aerial So High?

The original mast height was a common feature back in the 1980s. At that time, the only option was analogue television, which suffered heavily from signal reflections caused by hills, buildings, and large structures. These reflections caused what was known as “ghosting,” where a faint duplicate image appeared on the screen.

The only way to minimise ghosting was to raise the aerial as high as possible. Modern digital TV signals do not suffer from these same issues, which means the new aerial could be installed at a standard, safer height without reducing picture quality.

What Happened to the Old Aerial?

The customer informed us that the conservatory was due to be replaced in the near future. Because of this, the old aerial was left in place temporarily. Once the conservatory is removed or rebuilt, we will return to safely take down the original aerial and mast.

Result

The customer received:

  • A brand-new digital aerial installed in a safe, accessible position
  • A strong and reliable Freeview signal across all main channels
  • A future plan to remove the old mast once the conservatory is replaced
  • A modern installation that avoids the outdated issues of analogue positioning

The job was completed smoothly, leaving the customer with a fully working TV system and a much safer aerial setup for the years ahead.

Our Final Say

Older aerial systems can be difficult or unsafe to repair—especially when added structures like conservatories block access. In many cases, the best solution is to fit a new digital aerial in a more practical location. With modern digital signals, there’s no need for extreme mast heights, and a properly installed aerial will deliver excellent reception without the problems of analogue-era equipment.
