We were asked to attend a property up in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, near Skipton, because the customer was having ongoing issues with their BT TV service. Channels were dropping out and some services were not loading properly. In rural locations like this, TV reception can be more challenging, so we carried out a full inspection of the existing aerial system.
Inspection
Our engineer found that the TV aerial was originally aligned to the Emley Moor transmitter, which is a common choice in this part of Yorkshire. However, the aerial had corroded at the cable junction – the point where the coaxial cable connects to the aerial. Water and weathering at that point can quickly ruin the signal and cause exactly the kind of BT TV problems the customer was seeing.
Recommended Solution
We advised the customer that the best fix was to replace the aerial with a new, weather?proofed digital aerial and to renew the exposed cable run. The customer also asked if we could add an additional TV point in another room while we were on site, which we were happy to do.
Installation
- Old, corroded aerial removed
- New aerial installed and aligned to the correct transmitter
- New cabling run and terminated properly
- Additional TV point fitted in the requested room
Once the new aerial was in place we took a signal reading. The readings showed the signal was marginal – not unusual for a rural Dales location where you’re relying on a distant main transmitter.
Amplifier Fitted
To make sure the signal remained stable for both TV points, we installed a masthead/distribution amplifier. This boosted the incoming signal to a reliable level so that BT TV would work without pixelation or cut?outs and so that the second room would receive the same quality.
Final Setup
With the aerial replaced and the amplifier in place, we re?tuned both the BT TV set?top box and the TV so that they were locked to the correct frequency and transmitter. All the expected channels were now present and working.
Result
- New TV aerial installed in a rural, marginal?signal area
- Faulty, corroded cable junction removed
- Amplifier added to lift the signal for two TV points
- Extra TV socket installed as requested
- BT TV re?tuned and working correctly
Another happy customer in the Dales, with a TV system now ready for the conditions in that area.
