A TV aerial 350mtrs from the TV system

TV aerial system repair on a caravan park

Here is a picture of one of our vans that was installing a new TV aerial for a caravan park TV system. We were called to check out the existing system as a couple of the lodges were having issues with the Freeview reception. The system was fed via a TV aerial that was sited on a mast in the middle of the site, this was then distributed via an IRS multiswitch to each lodge. On inspection and after taking some signal readings we discovered that a new lodge had been sited directly in the line of site of the aerial and was blocking the Freeview signal. The answer was to move the aerial to a new site, but this was not as simple as we first thought. After taking numerous signal readings all over the park we found a site at the top of a hill behind all the lodges, but the only problem was, as you can see in the picture, it was 350 meters away from the system. After a lot of thought and head scratching our solution to the problem was to install a fibre optic cable underground (with the help of the park owner and his tractor) Fibre optic cable has zero loss so the signal would be as good at the TV system end as it was up at the aerial. We then connected it back to the existing system with a fibre IRS link transmitter and receiver. Problem solved.
