We were called out to a guest house in the Yorkshire Dales because the owner was having problems with Freeview in a couple of the bedrooms. Some TVs were working, but others were breaking up or losing channels altogether. With a full weekend of guests booked in, the proprietor needed the system back up and running quickly.
Fault Traced to the Loft
Our engineer checked the aerial and then followed the signal back through the property. The TV feeds were being distributed from a booster amplifier in the loft – a common setup in B&Bs and guest houses. Testing showed that this booster was no longer working properly, which was why a few of the rooms had poor reception while others were fine.
Repair Work Carried Out
- We removed the faulty booster amplifier and installed a new, good quality unit in the loft.
- We checked each TV feed coming from the amp to make sure signal levels were even.
- We also replaced a couple of aerial sockets in the guest rooms where the TV connections weren’t very good – some of the wall plates were worn and were adding to the problem.
Once the new amp was fitted and the poor sockets were changed, all the bedroom TVs picked up the full Freeview service again.
Result
- Freeview restored to all guest rooms
- Strong, even signal around the property
- Owner happy – everything working before the weekend guests arrived
